Decorative cabbage in landscape design

Few plants can boast of cold resistance, spectacular appearance, unpretentiousness and at the same time be ... edible! But decorative cabbage is an exception to the rule.

For those who are not familiar with this plant, at the word cabbage, there are "culinary" associations: broccoli, white cabbage, Brussels ... But this vegetable also has decorative species that can transform any area.

Decorative cabbage: a plant for the lazy

If you are a beginner gardener or are looking for an unpretentious, but at the same time spectacular plant for the plot, then decorative cabbage is just what you need! The plant is not afraid of the cold, it will please the eye even at -10⁰С, while only increasing the intensity of the color.

This is a biennial plant: decorative cabbage seeds are formed only in the second year. Cabbage grows from 20 to 140 cm in height, and the diameter of the socket sometimes reaches 1 m.

Ornamental cabbage likes well-lit moist places, but also feels rather well in cloudy weather. Vegetable perfectly tolerates multiple transplants, if you provide him with timely watering.

To keep the moisture in the ground longer, grumble the soil on the flowerbed, where decorative cabbage grows.

Varieties of decorative cabbage are divided into rosettes (headed) and leafy (palm). Rosettes have a short stem, and the leaves form a magnificent head of cabbage. Head cabbage forms are more popular in landscape design.

The decorative leafy cabbage resembles a palm tree: it has a long stem, from which large leaves with curly edges hang. These varieties look good in the center of the flower garden.

The advantage of such cabbage is that it is decorative for at least 4 months, which means that it continues to refresh the appearance of the garden even after most of the plants have faded.

Young leaves of ornamental cabbage are eaten: they are rich in selenium and are useful for immunity. The leaves can be added to the salad, canned or stew, pre-frozen, and then thawed (this will remove the bitterness).

Garden design: decorate with cabbage

Ornamental cabbage is good because it looks great in a flowerbed as among other plants, and one (or surrounded by "fellow").

The most remarkable feature of this wonder-vegetable, which gives it a zest, is the variety of leaf shapes and interesting color properties.

The color varies from light green to purple, changing the brightness during the season. On the edge of the leaves are usually located small cuts that make the cabbage "curly", because of what the plant looks openwork and lush.

If you choose a variety of ornamental cabbage for the garden wisely, you can combine the plants in an original way. For example, to diversify cabbage heads composition of rock garden or rock arias. Looks unusual, right?

Monoclumba from decorative cabbage looks no less stylish. If desired, you can plant cabbage of the same shape, but with different colors and alternating plants, thereby creating a geometric pattern.

Flowers of decorative cabbage can be used in bouquets. The water in which there is such a bouquet should be sweetened slightly with sugar, this will prolong the freshness of the flowers to 1 month.

Container compositions with decorative cabbage

In the garden or near the house look great composition of ornamental cabbage planted in pots, pots and other containers. In combination with other plants, decorative cabbage gives the composition bulkiness. Both head and leaf varieties of this plant look equally good in containers.

The optimal volume of the pot for planting decorative cabbage - 10-15 liters. You can build a composition of the pot with cabbage, and with the onset of strong frosts to make containers with plants in the house or put on the veranda.

After planting a decorative cabbage in a container, do not forget to water it every other day and feed it once a week with complex fertilizer.
