How to build a simple aqua system for growing plants at home

If you have long wanted to equip in your home a closed system that works on the principle of hydro- or aquaponic, now is the time to do it! The sale has everything you need, and to assemble a simple installation is not difficult.

The principle of operation of the aquapone installation is the hydroponic method of growing water-loving plants with simultaneous breeding of aquarium fish. In hydroponic systems, water is used to transport nutrients to plants, and this principle formed the basis of aquaponic. The second important component of the aqua installation is an aquarium with fish. Aquatic dwellers leave behind waste products, which are a natural fertilizer of green crops. The most important thing is to preserve the balance of the water system so that it is at the same time non-toxic to fish and contains a complex of substances necessary for plant nutrition. Below we consider an example of creating the simplest aqua installation.

This system differs from analogs in that it is a closed "snake" system in which water circulates. Small stones or gravel are placed on the bottom of the water tanks. To build such a system will need:

  • 4 PVC pipes with a length of 150 cm and a diameter of 12.5 cm;
  • 4 fittings;
  • 4 cap-terminals;
  • 2 large tanks covered with PVC film for ponds;
  • 2 water circulation pumps;
  • rubber hose 6 m long pipe and a diameter of 10 mm;
  • 2 metal clips;
  • plastic cups, saw, drill, drill bits, PVC glue, gravel and crushed stone.

AT PVC pipes make holes corresponding to the diameter of the bottom of the cups. The distance between the holes should be about 18-20 cm. At first, apply the markings and make the holes of small diameter using a standard drill. Then install a nozzle for large-diameter holes on the drill. Insert its central drill into the hole prepared in advance and make a hole of the desired diameter at low speed.

When making holes, keep the drill strictly vertically, since even a small displacement can damage the pipe and make it unsuitable for further use.

Four identical tubes can be assembled from four tubes. Connect the two pipes with fittings, and attach a pump and a water tank to each one. Since the system operates under the influence of gravity, one tube must be located above the other. Connect the tubes with fittings and cover the ends with caps. Seal all gaps with sealant.

Fix PVC film in water tanks and place gravel and small stones on the bottom. Place a pump between them, lead the hose to the edge of the tank and fix it there. Pull the other end of the hose through the hole in the pipe and secure it with adhesive tape or a metal clip. Water should flow from the side of the pipe that is above. To drain the water back into the tank at the end of the pipe you need to make a drain hole.

Using a thin drill, simultaneously make several holes in the bottom of the plastic cups. Fill them with a suitable material: clay balls, gravel, pumice. Then plant the seedlings and insert the cups into the holes prepared in the pipes.

It will only activate the system. The level of water flow that will circulate in the pipe should be 2-2.5 cm. Before launching the fish into the installation, it is necessary to disinfect the water tanks with bleach, filling them to the brim and leaving them for 12 hours. Then the containers should be thoroughly rinsed and filled with clean distilled water.
