Growing cabbage seedlings at home

The theater begins with a hanger, and the garden - with seedlings. To grow a good harvest of cabbage, it is worth investing soul and strength in the cultivation of seedlings. We will tell you how to grow it on a windowsill.

Cabbage is a rather unpretentious plant, but light-requiring. If you sow the seeds too soon, the seedlings may die from lack of light. Therefore, it is important to correctly determine the sowing time.

As a rule, sow cabbage begins in mid-March, sowing seeds in portions with an interval of several days to extend the harvest period. Sowing time depends on the type of early ripening:

  • cabbage early varieties planted in the ground after 30-40 days after the first shoots,
  • mid-season varieties - in 40-50 days,
  • late - after 50-60 days after germination.

Add to this another 4-5 days for the emergence of seedlings and 3-4 days for the adaptation of the seedlings after planting in the ground, and you can calculate the time when it is time to start planting cabbage.

You will need:

  • cabbage seeds,
  • box for seedlings
  • peat,
  • sod land
  • sand,
  • potassium permanganate (manganese),
  • glass jar,
  • plate,
  • paper towels,
  • paddle
  • spray gun
  • watering can,
  • wooden stick,
  • glass,
  • drainage.

Preparing seeds for sowing

The first step is to prepare the seeds for sowing. This is necessary in order to increase their germination.

To disinfect cabbage seeds, soak them for 20 minutes in hot water (about 50 ° C). After they are laid on a plate, covered with a napkin and sent to the refrigerator for 12 hours.

After the seeds are warmed and cooled, they can be considered ready for sowing.

Preparing the soil for growing cabbage seedlings

For the cultivation of cabbage seedlings is not desirable to use a simple garden soil. It is better to cook the soil mix yourself. For this, it is necessary to mix in equal parts turfy ground and sand. Then the ground is watered with boiling water for disinfection and sifted or carefully loosened to increase its moisture and breathability. At the end, ash is added to the mixture at the rate of 10 tbsp. on the bucket mix.

Ash disinfects the soil and prevents the defeat of seedlings blackfoot.

Preparing a container for seedlings

Before planting, the seedling container must be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized (this can be done with a solution of potassium permanganate).

Cabbage does not need to be planted in separate containers: the seedlings are grown in boxes and must be dived to make the heads up large and weighty.

We sow cabbage seeds

At the bottom of the box with a height of 4-5 cm it is necessary to pour a layer of drainage (you can use expanded clay, pebbles or egg shells). After that, the container is filled with soil and spill it with water.

A stick in the ground must be grooved at a distance of 3-4 cm from each other. Seeds are sown to a depth of about 1 cm with an interval of 2 cm. It is important not to sow the seeds too close to each other, otherwise the seedlings will have to thin out.

Next, you need to sprinkle the seeds with earth, compact it and moisten it with a spray bottle.

The container is covered with plastic wrap, plastic lid or glass and kept in a bright place at room temperature (18-20 ° C). Shoots should appear on the 4-5 day.

The ground should be regularly moistened so that the seeds are not dry. This should be done carefully, using a spray gun. However, remember that excessive moisture can lead to infection of seedlings with a black leg.

Hardening seedlings

After the appearance of the first shoots, it is necessary to start hardening the seedlings. To do this, for a week the box is transferred to a room with a temperature of 8-10 ° C, so as not to allow the seedlings to stretch.

After a week, the seedlings can again be transferred to a warmer room (this could be a warmed balcony or a loggia, or a greenhouse). It is important to observe the correct temperature regime: 14 or 17 ° C during the day, in cloudy and sunny weather, respectively, and 9 ° C at night.

Dive cabbage seedlings correctly

Dive cabbage seedlings are carried out when the first true leaflet has "hatch" on the seedlings. Dive seedlings can be both in individual containers, and in a common container (in this case, the distance between the plants should be 5 x 5 cm).

Before the procedure, the ground is watered with a pink solution of potassium permanganate at room temperature.

After you need a spoon to carefully dig up the seedling from the total capacity, remove the lower part of the root system and transplant in an individual container, digging it into the soil to the point of growth.

Caring for seedlings

After the picking, cabbage seedlings must be kept at a temperature of 18-20 ° C in order for them to settle down faster. Three days later, the seedlings begin to harden again. For this, containers are transferred to a room with a temperature of 13-14 ° C during the day and 9-10 ° C at night.

Since the light day is still fairly short in early spring, the cabbage seedlings need to be illuminated with fluorescent lamps or special fitolamps.

In order for cabbage seedlings to grow well, daylight hours should be 12-15 hours.

Please note that the seedlings must be fed. The first feeding is carried out 9 days after transplanting seedlings into individual containers. The second - after another 2 weeks. The third dressing is carried out in order to improve the immunity of plants a few days before transplanting into the ground. For these purposes, you can use ready-made liquid fertilizers for seedlings (according to the instructions).

By strictly observing the temperature regime, regularly watering and timely feeding up the cabbage seedlings, you will certainly grow good healthy seedlings of this healthy and tasty vegetable. Follow our instructions and you will succeed!
