How to make a children's sandbox in the country with their own hands (step by step instructions)

Wooden sandbox - the most common children's entertainment, which is like almost all preschoolers. In order not to overpay for the manufacture and installation of structures, you can build a sandbox with your own hands.

Beautiful sandboxes can be created from a variety of materials, giving them an unusual shape, color and size. But the functionality of the design will not change, and children up to a certain age are more important than the form. Therefore, it is worth making a simple sandbox made of wood with a lid in the country - it will cost you cheaply, manufacturing will not take more than one weekend, and such a construction will last for years.

DIY sandbox: drawings, dimensions, assembly

Small children not only love to mess around in the sand, but also pull all the interesting things into their mouths. It is worth the parents to distract, and now sovochek, mold or fingers themselves are licked. Of course, the sand on the street can not be sterile, but to solve serious problems with its pollution is still worth it. That is why we will talk today about how to make a sandbox with a cover.

This design allows you to avoid debris and plant residues in the sand, prevent animals from arranging a toilet in it, and reduce the wetting of the sand during precipitation.

Sandbox scheme and materials for it

The size of the children's sandbox each determines for itself. The standard design, in which 3-4 babies can play freely, is a square with sides 150 cm long and 25 cm high. If there is one child in your family, or you have very little free space on the plot, you can reduce the sandbox to size 100 × 100 cm

In order to make a standard sandbox, you will need:

  • 2 six-meter boards 12 cm wide and 3 cm thick;
  • 2 six-meter boards 12 cm wide and 2 cm thick;
  • 2 meter beams with a side width of 5 cm;
  • 6 large door or wicket hinges;
  • a piece of geotextile size 160 × 160 cm;
  • wood screws;
  • protective wood impregnation;
  • self-adhesive seal.

Whatever the size of sandbox you choose, it will only affect the amount of material, but the tools will still need the same ones:

  • hacksaw, saw or jigsaw;
  • screwdriver (you can replace the hammer, but then instead of screws will have to take nails);
  • roulette;
  • sandpaper or grinder with a grinding wheel.

How to build a sandbox

Before you start building a sandbox, prepare a place for it. You will need to remove the top layer of soil to a depth of 5-7 cm, level the ground, remove large plant roots, if any. Spread a piece of geotextile on the prepared place so that it slightly goes beyond the boundaries of the sandbox.

Sand is always taken from the sandbox across the site and gets enough sleep during the game, so you should not install the sandbox next to plants sensitive to the composition of the soil, it is better to do it in the middle of the lawn.

If desired, a layer of expanded clay, sand and gravel or fine pebbles can be poured over the geotextile to improve drainage, but you can do without it

Then start making a sandbox with a lid.

  1. Cut each board with a thickness of 3 cm into 4 equal parts, sand them carefully and treat them with an impregnation protecting the wood from fungus, moisture and direct sunlight.
  2. Cut one timber into 4 equal parts, also sand and treat with impregnation.
  3. Using the screws, fasten the boards in a two-tier structure, attaching them to the uneven bars.
  4. Carefully drive all the caps of the screws or nails into the wood to avoid injury.
  5. Between the boards, lay a tape of self-adhesive sealer - this will help avoid sand eruption through the cracks.

If further steps to make a folding table-shaped lid and benches seem unnecessary or too complicated, you can always just make a square shield of boards that can cover the sandbox at night. The only problem is that such a lid is very heavy, and children themselves will not be able to remove it.

Before you start making a cover-transformer for the sandbox, carefully measure the resulting base. Then cut the remaining boards into 8 equal parts and begin to assemble a shop and a table.

For a table, attach one board directly to the sandbox using screws, and the second to the first one using 2 wood loops. So you can make a table wider or narrower or lay it out at night as a cover.

Another six boards use for the shop, with 2 of them going to the seat, 2 - on the back, and 2 - on the mount to the frame. Screw the hinges to the outside of the lid so that the inner straps are folded down when opening up. For fastening and fixing the back, use a polished bar. Calculate its length so that when you open the lid, it provides a reliable support for the backrest.

Paint the sandbox

Although the natural wood sandbox is good and easy to fit into any design, some families prefer to paint it. You can do any bright monochromatic paint, and you can apply a pattern on the stencil. In any case, you will need not simple paint, and those that are suitable for outdoor work. It is advisable to take a water-based aerosol enamel, designed for painting children's toys - it is safe, bright and dries in a couple of hours.

Before painting the sandbox, remove it from the ground so that all edges are painted evenly.

How much sand is needed in the sandbox

Each parent who has decided for the first time to build a similar structure on his site faces the question of filling the sandbox. In fact, it’s quite simple to calculate the volume you need. It is enough to multiply the length, width and height of the sandbox and take into account that they do not fill it to the brim.

In our case it is: 1.5 × 1.5 × 0.2 = 0.45 cubic meters of sand, i.e. about 1500 kg or 30 bags.

Sand for children's sandboxes is desirable to take the river, before filling the sandbox it should sift and shed a weak solution of potassium permanganate or boiling water.

What other types of sandboxes are there?

Arguing about which sandbox is better is pointless. After all, its safety and convenience for the baby should be put in the first place, and only then the design options should be discussed. And yet, if the usual children's wooden sandbox with a lid seems too simple and does not fit into the concept of the site, then you can consider other options.

Sandbox with a canopy

A canopy over a children's sandbox is not a design whim, but a harsh necessity. Children spend playing games an hour or more, and under the scorching rays of the sun it can become dangerous. Therefore, unless your sandbox is located under trees or in the shade of buildings, a shed will be a necessary element.

It is quite simple to install it - it is enough to extend the bars, on which the walls of the sandbox are fastened, upwards by 1.7-2 m, fasten a rectangular frame from the same beam on top and stretch the awning. The easiest way to do it is from dense fabric, for example, tarpaulin, but you can also consider colored polycarbonate, boards, roofing materials. The main thing that the canopy was securely fastened and sheltered children from direct sunlight.

Sandbox of tires

A small sandbox of tires can be done in two ways. If you have a wheel from a truck (very large) car, then sand can be poured directly into the center of the tire, after having washed it and painted it in a bright color.

If on the hands of only standard wheels from cars, take three tires, cut them in half and lay on the ground in the form of a flower, holding the edges of the wheels together. Of course, such a sandbox is not too eco-friendly, and it will not last long, but as a temporary solution has the right to life.

Sandbox ship

The sandbox in the form of a boat or a boat is more interesting than a regular square, since it opens up space for thematic games. In order to make it, you only need to replace one straight wall with a triangle. You can install the wheel, flag, small bench or something else.

Sandbox shell

If you don’t want to do anything at all, it’s embarrassing to look at a child inclined in depression, you can buy a ready sandbox. There are small options that imitate the shell in shape, with the upper flap being the lid itself, which is sometimes necessary.

Did not meet such options in stores? Then give preference to the usual plastic artificial reservoir. They come in various shapes, sizes and colors, are easily transferred from place to place, wash, convenient to store.

Children playing in the sandbox are not only cute and safe, but also convenient, because they allow parents to do their own thing, keeping the kids in sight. Therefore, spend a couple of days building your own sandbox and enjoy the summer games with the children.
