Privet privet - features of landing, care and reproduction

In any garden there is a place for a low hedge. Why not create it from privet common?

When it comes to small hedges, everyone usually thinks of boxwood, although there are quite a few other plants suitable for creating green fences. One of them - privet. This shrub is great for shaping because it branches well and tolerates pruning easily. In addition, after cutting the plant for a long time keeps the shape given to it. At various times privet pleases a dense wall of bright green, small white flowers, and then dark glossy berries.

Features of privet ordinary

Privet is an ornamental plant with green foliage that falls with the onset of frost. The shade of the leaves can vary from yellow to dark green. There are also varieties with purple or blue shades of foliage. The shrub blossoms with small flowers, gathered in inflorescences up to 18 cm long.

For cultivation in the middle lane 4 types of privet are most suitable: common, golden, weeping and pyramidal. Privet primrose - the most popular of all because of its unpretentiousness.

Privet primrose

In nature, shrubs can reach 3 m in height. Fruits on a privet hold for a very long time - until January. The plant tolerates frost well, as well as temporary drought. Since in primitive environment common privet is most often found in places with chalky soil, it will also grow well in the garden on light ground. But loam and dense soil - not the best substrates for planting this culture.

Breeding privet

Privet privet breeds in several ways. Can divide the plantby cutting off a part of a bush with a shovel and transplanting it to another place. You can also dig root scions, to separate them from the mother bush and seated.

But the easiest way to reproduce privet with grafting. To carry out this procedure should be in July. Cherenok the plant on the same principle as the black currant.

From the cuttings of privet grow here such neat seedlings

Another way you can propagate a priest is cuttings. It is enough to prikopat several lower shoots, and in the future they will give young seedlings. Previously on the bark of the selected shoots should be made several punctures with a needle. On top of prikopannye twigs is to put sphagnum moss or a film, so that moisture does not quickly leave the soil.

Planting and care

Planting privet ordinary, as well as care for her, almost no difficulty.

Where to plant the primer? The plant is relatively shade tolerant, drought resistant and not too whimsical to the place of planting. But keep in mind that the peak of its beauty, it reaches only when grown in favorable conditions. Therefore, it is best to plant the privet in open space at a distance of about 0.8-1 m from other landings. Culture prefers a drained soil with a neutral or slightly acid reaction. The most suitable substrate: a mixture of sod, humus and sand in a ratio of 3: 2: 1.

Landing rules privet. Before planting the site should be dug to the depth of the spade bayonet. Planting pit in diameter should reach 60-70 cm and be 30 cm deeper than the seedling root system.

Pit should be filled with water and wait until the moisture is absorbed. After that, it should be filled with a drainage layer of 10-20 cm and sprinkled with substrate. The earth must be filled with a mound, so that the roots of a privet can be laid out neatly along it. Next, the pit is filled up, parallel to trampling down the ground with your hands, the plant is watered with a small amount of water and mulched with a layer of peat (up to 8 cm).

To create a hedge, turquoise saplings are planted in a trench 0.5 m wide and 0.6 m deep at a distance of 30-40 cm from each other.

Watering privet. The plant loves moisture, but it needs to be watered only in drought. The rest of the time he has enough natural rainfall. Watering should be rare, but abundant. So that the shrub always has enough moisture in the soil, it is recommended to mulch the ground around it. This is usually done in spring, when the soil warms up well. On average, for a season, primer needs to water only 3-4 times.

How to feed a plant? Privet prefer organic fertilizers, which are best applied at the end of spring. To do this, under each bush should make a bucket of compost or humus. Hedge easier to feed, bringing organic matter along the landings. On top of the fertilizer can be scattered granules of superphosphate at the rate of 10 g per 1 sq.m. Fertilizers will get to the roots of plants during watering or with rainwater.

Pruning privet

One of the important components of caring for turquoise - pruning. Even if you are new to this business, the bush will “forgive” you for the first inept attempts to mow it. The plant is quite well restored after pruning.

You can trim the privet soon after planting, as soon as the sapling takes root and starts growing. The first pruning is to shorten the tips of the shoots: it stimulates tillering. When the shoots grow to 15 cm, you can re-pruning. According to this principle, the privet should be trimmed for 2 years, after which the shrub (hedge) is ready for forming pruning, which is carried out in May and August. Sanitary pruning time - early spring.

If you are going to create a hedge on the site, pay attention to common privet. As a natural fencing, the lane planting of this ornamental shrub looks no worse than boxwood.
