Summer care for potatoes - step by step master class with photos

Planted and forgotten? With this approach, collecting a lot of potatoes at the end of the summer will not succeed. Although this vegetable is unpretentious, in June it should be given a few hours, or even a whole day, if you have a large plantation.

If your potato plantations look like a green sea in the first half of summer, and you do not know where to start and how not to get lost in these thickets, get acquainted with our master class and repeat it on your site.

Step 1. Estimate the scale and divide the area into sectors

If you have only 6 acres and potatoes on them a couple of beds, you can safely skip this stage - you can handle all the volume perfectly in one step. But if you plant a separate plot with potatoes, or a whole field, you cannot process it all at once. In this case, conditionally divide the landing area into several equal parts and gradually carry out all the work on each of them.

Step 2. Weed the potatoes

Proceed to weeding the potatoes, taking with you a capacious capacity for weeds and a pulling powder or a chopper on a short handle. Do not try to grab several furrows at once, so you can step on a bush or break a part of potato stalks. In addition, the wider the coverage, the more likely it is to miss something. Two rows - optimum volume for one pass.

When weeding potatoes, do not try to remove absolutely all weeds, pull out large, fast-growing and prickly specimens. You can leave a trifle, because during weeding and hilling its roots are damaged, and the weeds die by themselves.

It is better to carry out the work in gloves, because in the potato field you can meet wheat grass or nettle. If you are inconvenient to weed in thick cloth gloves, take advantage of medical ones - they do not hamper movements, but protect your hands from minor scratches and prickles.

Step 3. Spud potatoes

The next necessary stage is hilling. You can skip it only in 2 cases - if you planted potatoes in straw or green manure, or if your plantings have already bloomed. It is advisable to have time to pile up the potatoes before the buds on it begin to open, or after.

Tool for earthing every one chooses for themselves. Someone prefers a manual okuchnik, someone a walk-behind tractor (actual in large areas), someone manages to spud potatoes with a spade by hand. In any case, remember that your task is to ensure the flow of air to the tubers, and not to bare them, so do not overdo it. On ridges with other vegetables, loosening can cope with this task, but this number will not work with potatoes - it is too deep.

  • Correct hilling of potatoes - time, tools and whether it is necessary at all
Potatoes, though not a capricious culture, still need a certain amount of care. An important stage is hilling, which is carried out in a mass of ways.

Step 4. Understand the potatoes caught in the air

If you worked too hard on the hiller, unevenly laid out the potatoes while planting, or placed rows close to each other, while hilling some of the tubers may be on the surface. In principle, it is not so scary, but you have to understand well which of them can be left to grow, and which ones will have to be picked up and eaten.

So, if the potato (of any size) has come off and is left without a spine, take it and taste the first crop. Left in the ground, it will become bait for the wireworm or will rot, which also will not benefit the rest of the landings. But if the potato turned out to be on the surface, but did not lose the spine and firmly sits on the bush, you can sprinkle it with earth, slightly compact the soil and leave to ripen.

Step 5. Fertilize the potatoes

Even if you applied fertilizer during planting, over the past one and a half to two months the soil has been depleted, and even a portion of nutrition will not interfere with the potatoes. Ahead of it is flowering, the growth of tubers, which means that in addition to nitrogen, which is still important, potassium with phosphorus must also be included in the “diet”.

You can use any complex mineral fertilizer with NPK 16:16:16 or a similar composition (for example, bias towards nitrogen). If you have a generous neighbor, he has chickens, and on weekends you cook kebabs on wood, then everything you need for potatoes can be obtained naturally.

Dissolve 1 cup of ash or ash and 1 liter of chicken manure in a bucket of water. If there is no litter, you can replace it with concentrate sold in the store - in this case 100 ml (one and a half of the cap) goes to the bucket. Stir the mixture thoroughly and pour between it a row at the rate of 0.5 l of fertilizer per bush.

Step 6. Treat the pest potatoes

In the first summer month, Colorado beetles rarely appear on potatoes, but this does not mean that the plants are safe. Of course, the time for the use of aggressive drugs has not yet come, but folk remedies can already be used.

It is easiest to use a solution of mustard (100 g of dry powder and 50 g of laundry soap diluted in a bucket of water and spray planting). Processing folk remedies spend every week, and if it rains, then more often. Do not want to endlessly spray ridge? Spread bait for beetles - chopped potato slices and regularly collect those who come to eat them.
