Blackberry Trimming and Forming Rules

Erect, creeping and remontant blackberry varieties need pruning. Forming a bush is not an easy task. But thanks to our advice, you will be able to master this difficult technique.

But this should be done correctly, so as not to harm the plant.

How to trim the blackberry?

Blackberries are cut 2 times a year:

  • In the fall. Under the root they remove the spawn-bearing and damaged branches, as well as poorly developing green whips, and strong young shoots are shortened by a quarter. So, on a bush of medium size there should be 8-10 healthy lashes.
  • In the spring. Cut out frozen shoots. Determining whether a branch has frozen is fairly simple. Live brown shoots, elastic and slightly shine. And the frozen branch easily breaks, with time it turns black, it becomes rough and loose.

Do not be afraid to remove a lot of shoots. It is better to leave only a few healthy branches of blackberry than a bush with excess wood, and even with damaged. 5-6 healthy shoots will produce more crop than a thickened shrub.

Forming upright blackberry

Such blackberries, as a rule, are very frost-resistant, but in regions with an unstable climate it is better to shelter it for the winter. And in order not to damage fragile branches, the bush should be prepared in advance.

Upright varieties are best shaped as a fan. To do this, in spring, overwintered shoots are raised on the trellis and placed in the middle directly above the roots of the bush, and all young shoots are allowed on both sides of the growing point and tied them to the lower wires. Thus, the branches will grow parallel to the ground.

Creeping varieties are less winter-hardy, therefore, when preparing a bush for wintering, it is impossible to do without forming it correctly. The bush should be divided into two parts: vegetative and fructifying. For this, in spring, overwintered shoots are wound in a spiral on the trellis on the right side, and on the left side - all young shoots.

In the autumn, they cut off the extra climbing shoots formed over the summer, remove the bush from the trellis, unravel the shoots, lay them on the ground and leave 8-10 of the strongest, the rest are removed. All shoots located on the right, cut at the root.

The remaining healthy shoots are neatly folded so that they do not get entangled, they are laid into a previously dug trench and covered.

A bushless variety can not be placed in a trench, but simply covered, for example, with agrofibre.
