Zucchini and pumpkin are the most beloved brightest representatives of the Pumpkin family. Starting from mid-summer and almost until the end of October, we are happy to harvest and happy to fry, cook, stuff these healthy and tasty vegetables.

Many pumpkin fans would love to save their favorite vegetables to enjoy their taste in the winter. Prepare, for example, delicious zucchini rolls or please your loved ones with pumpkin pie.

But, unfortunately, these vegetables taste not only to us, but also to various fungal infections. Let's look at the most common diseases of pumpkin in order to "calculate" the enemy in time and correctly eliminate it.

Alternaria

Alternaria (black spot fruit, dry spot) is a common disease of pumpkin plants.

From the beginning brown and white spots appear on the vegetables, then the surface of the fruit can cover a velvety black color.

How to deal with pumpkin alterninoz and zucchini?

  • Properly collect vegetables: removing them, leave the stalk length of at least 6-7 cm.
  • Do not wash vegetables before storage.
  • Important storage conditions - the absence of moisture and sunlight.
  • Do not store vegetables in storage on each other, in several rows. Best of all, if they do not come into contact at all.
  • When stored in the refrigerator, wrap them in a paper bag with small holes for ventilation.
  • Regularly check the condition of vegetables in storage, remove damaged ones.
  • In case of detection of damage to the pumpkin, small specks can be cut with a sharp knife, smeared with a brilliant green cut. This fruit will not be stored. It must be quickly reworked.

Olive Mold

Another name for olive mold is kladosporiosis.

The disease can be found on the velvety patina of olive-black color. It often affects vegetables stored in basements and cellars.

How to deal with olive mold pumpkin and zucchini?

  • Store exceptionally healthy, intact, medium sized fruits with firm and dry stalks.
  • Each vegetable should be at some distance from the "neighbor", store them on the shelves, use straw as a substrate.
  • The storage room should be dry, dark, cool (about 5 ° C) and well ventilated.
  • Disinfect the storage before laying a new crop in it.
  • Get rid of the affected vegetables so that the fungal infection does not have time to spread to healthy zucchini and pumpkins.

White rot

White rot (sclerotinia) is a dangerous disease that does not spare either zucchini or pumpkin.

A dense patina of white color appears on the affected vegetables, with time it is complemented by white or black dots (sclerotia). Then the tissue of the vegetable softens, and it rots.

How to deal with the white rot of pumpkin and zucchini?

  • It is necessary to maintain humidity at the level of 80-85% in the storage (this indicator can be calculated using special devices). Adjust it by airing the room. The optimum air temperature is no more than 5 ° C.
  • If the vegetable is affected by rot, immediately get rid of the damaged fruit so that it does not infect others.
  • Periodically check the condition of vegetables in storage. Remove all tainted, shriveled, unhealthy specimens.

Remember: a vegetable needs attention not only in the garden. Save the harvest until spring is not an easy task. But, hopefully, with our tips, everything will work out for you!
