This vegetable was grown in ancient Rome, and its name is translated from Italian as “cabbage turnip”. Although our climate is far from the usual for kohlrabi, it can be grown easily in most parts of Russia and in other regions with a temperate climate.

How to sow kohlrabi seeds

Kohlrabi is cold-resistant, non-capricious culture, and with proper farming techniques, its crop in the middle lane can be harvested three times per season.

It is possible to sow kohlrabi not only on seedlings, but also immediately into the ground.

  1. Soak the seeds for 15 minutes in water heated to 50 ° C.
  2. Immediately immerse them in hot water from the hot water for 1 minute.
  3. Soak the seeds in a solution of Kornevin or Appin for 12 hours.
  4. Rinse and refrigerate in the vegetable compartment for a day.
  5. Wrap in a damp cloth and wait for them to wrap, and then sow to a depth of 1.5-2 cm.

If you plan to grow kohlrabi seedlings, then sow each seed in a separate container to avoid picking - the culture does not tolerate it.

Sowing Kohlrabi in the ground

It is also possible to sow kohlrabi seeds in open ground, although it should be done not earlier than mid-June. In this case, the harvest you get to the beginning of autumn, and this cabbage will go to storage. For earlier sowing, cabbage shoots will need to be covered with agrofiber or film.

Rows for growing kohlrabi are chosen by those on which cruciferous plants did not grow in the previous two years.

Sow kohlrabi should be carefully, putting the seeds in the ground at a distance of 20 cm from each other and 60 cm between the rows, so that later seedlings do not plant.

Soil for kohlrabi seedlings are prepared from a mixture of lowland peat, humus and sod land (in equal proportions). Kohlrabi can also be sown in peat tablets, or filled with a mixture of small pots. Crops are covered with glass and exposed to a window, maintaining a temperature of about 20 ° C indoors. When the first shoots appear in the containers, the glass should be removed and the pots put in a cool (8-10 ° C) place. There they should be 10 days, and then the seedlings are returned to a warm, but not hot room and put in a well-lit place.

Caring for kohlrabi seedlings is no different from caring for white cabbage. You can use the same fertilizer, and watering can be done at the same intervals. In phase 2 of these leaves, Kohlrabi seedlings are sprayed with a 0.4% solution of superphosphate (40 g per 10 liters of water). Two weeks before the landing in the ground sprayed with a solution of potassium sulfate and urea (1 tbsp of each drug in 10 liters of water).
