Potatoes under film - how to get a harvest 3 weeks earlier

The first crop of potatoes I want to get as soon as possible. This is not at all difficult to do if in the spring you start growing potatoes of early varieties under film. We will talk about the intricacies of this process.

Harvest early potatoes can be obtained in different ways. One of the most simple and popular - growing potatoes under the film. This is an eco-friendly, cheap and at the same time effective method, which was appreciated by residents of northern and temperate regions. How to make it so that the first fruits can be enjoyed in early summer?

As with any method of growing potatoes, the "film" option has its pros and cons.

You can also grow potatoes under agrofibre or spunbond

The advantages of planting potatoes under the film:

  • under the film, the earth warms faster;
  • earlier shoots appear and the phases of plant development accelerate;
  • no weeds, which means weeding needs;
  • the root system of film potatoes develops better, so it is not afraid of late frosts;
  • ultra early harvest.

Disadvantages of growing potatoes under film:

  • under the film, potatoes can quickly rot;
  • difficulty with watering;
  • only early varieties are suitable.

To grow early potatoes, you need to remember a few agrotechnical rules. First you need to choose a suitable early variety (more on this below) and prepare the tubers for "sprint" growth. Since the seed material does not need much, it is more profitable to plant large tubers for planting. Large potatoes more easily tolerate the adverse conditions in which they are placed.

Large tubers of ultra early varieties are the best candidates for cultivation under film

Massive potatoes grow faster, forming tall and strong bushes with a large number of stems and tubers. But first, they need to be prepared so that the period between planting and emergence of shoots is reduced to a minimum. Seed potatoes are germinated in the light for 30-45 days at a temperature of 12-15 ° C (this is called vernalization). Tubers at the same time are placed in boxes in 1-2 layers tops out.

To protect the tubers from withering and stimulate the appearance of eyes, spray them with water every 5-7 days.

Jarovized tubers are grown in a humid and nutrient medium 7-10 days before planting. To do this, peat is poured into 2/3 boxes, potatoes are buried in it and placed in a dark, ventilated room with a temperature of 13-15 ° C and a relative humidity of 65-70%. In sprouted potatoes appear sprouts 2-3 cm long and roots.

Now you need to choose a bed for planting early potatoes. It should be a south-facing location that dries out earlier than others on the site, and is covered from the prevailing winds. For early potatoes, the ideal soil is a dried peat or light loam. Before disembarking (which usually takes place from the second to the third decade of March), the soil must be prepared. For example, fertilize it with a solution of 10 liters of water, 30 g of potassium chloride, 1 g of copper sulfate and 60 g of superphosphate.

Optimum depth of landing should not exceed 10 cm

After the necessary preparatory work, you can proceed directly to the landing. Placement of tubers and landing pattern is selected depending on the size of the film cover. The standard web width is 120-180 cm, so 2-3 rows of potatoes fit under the film. The planting scheme for early potatoes is as follows: 60x25-30 cm or 70x20-25 cm (the first figure indicates the distance between rows, and the second between the tubers in the rows). The depth of landing is small - 8-10 cm.

There are two ways to shelter early potatoes: frame and frameless. In the frame method, arcs of 60-80 cm height are made from any flexible material (metal, plastic, etc.). On top of the frame, a film sheet is tensioned, which is fixed along the edges with the help of a handful of earth or stones. The frameless method assumes that the film is simply spread over the bed. However, it can not be strongly pressed on the sides and edges, so as not to damage the growing shoots.

Until the potatoes come up, landing is not airing. When sprouts appear, and the temperature in the street during the day will be about 20 ° C, the film is turned off at the edges, but at night they are closed again to protect the shoots from frost. If the weather is stable and hot, and the bushes have reached a height of 20-25 cm, several holes of 10 mm in diameter can be made every 10-15 cm in a staggered pattern. Approximately in 2-3 weeks after planting, the plants are watered, in passing adding additional dressing - 25 g of ammonium sulfate or 12 g of urea per 1 sq. M.

The film can be removed in mid-May.

The second time the potatoes are fed at the beginning of budding. Potassium nitrate or potassium sulphate (30 g) or potassium magnesia (50 g) are introduced at this time. This amount of fertilizer is dissolved in 10 liters of water. On one plant consumed 1 liter of solution. If the weather is rainy, fertilizing is applied dry, sprinkling fertilizer along the rows, at a distance of 5-7 cm from the plants. Each bush will be enough teaspoon of fertilizer. After that, the potatoes spud.

Watering is done as needed. If at this time there is a lot of rain, and there is enough moisture through the holes, no additional watering is necessary for the potatoes. In dry and warm weather, it is advisable to water it every 7 days, the irrigation rate is 50-60 liters of water per 1 square meter

It remains to determine the ultra early and early potato varieties, which will be comfortable under the film cover.

Ultra early high-yielding table variety of Dutch selection. Allows you to collect two crops per season. Tubers are oval, slightly elongated. The peel is rough with small eyes, light yellow color. The flesh does not darken after cooking and has a rich taste. The variety is resistant to pathogens of potato cancer, golden nematode, rot, scab and viral infections. Well kept in cool conditions for up to 3-3.5 months.

Light yellow

Early ripe table fruit grade. Tubers are white, round shape with small eyes, good presentation. The plant requires minimal maintenance - you only need to regularly loosen the soil and deal with weeds in a timely manner. The taste is pleasant, the pulp on the cut does not darken. Potatoes are resistant to cancer, withstands late blight and various viruses. Due to the dense skin, the tubers are stored for a long time - in the winter, 92-95% of the fruit can be preserved.

Creamy white

Do not be confused by the name of the variety, in fact, it is not picky at all to the soil and weather conditions. Tubers are round-oval with small eyes and smooth dark brown skin. Potatoes are well boiled soft and have excellent taste. The plant is rarely affected by blackleg, various viruses, but often suffers from late blight of tubers and leaves.

One of the earliest varieties of potatoes, successfully grown in Ukraine, Russia and Moldova. Under favorable conditions in the southern regions it is easy to get two harvests. Riviera - drought-resistant variety, its bushes with a developed root system will always find moisture. Oval tubers with a strong light yellow skin and small eyes. Pulp aromatic pleasant taste. The first crop can be harvested before the peak late blight activity begins. Sometimes potatoes are affected by scab.

Light yellow

Very unpretentious variety in terms of composition and type of soil. Due to this, the geography of its landings is very wide. The plant responds just as calmly to changes in temperature and humidity. Over time, the leaves become hard and coarse, which does not like the Colorado potato beetle, who prefers soft and tender leaves. Tubers are large, rounded with light yellow skin. It is quite thin, sensitive to mechanical damage. Owners of this variety should be especially wary of returning spring frosts, but the variety remains resistant to most diseases.

Growing potatoes under film is an excellent technology that will help not only to avoid recurring frosts, but also to get potatoes ahead of time. Try the film version next season, and by early June you will have dishes from early potatoes on the table.
